How to Use Layouts and Themes in PowerPoint 2007

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 offers a number of ways to customize your presentations, including themes, which affect the background design, fonts, and colors of your slides, and layouts, which change the position, type and number of text and content boxes on each slide. Use the following instructions with a new presentation or with an existing presentation. If using an existing presentation, save a copy before you start so you can avoid making too many changes that you may want to reverse later.

Instructions

  1. Working with Layouts

    • 1

Open a new presentation in PowerPoint. By default, one slide is included in new presentations: a title slide. This has space for a title and subtitle.

    • 2

Create a new slide by clicking on the "New Slide" text on the Home tab, in the Slides group.

    • 3

A variety of slide layouts appear in the "Office Themes" menu beneath the "Layout" button, including Title Slide, Title and Content, Comparison, and Blank. Select the layout for your second slide.

    • 4

With any slide template, edit the layout by resizing, deleting, and adding text boxes, pictures, charts and videos. To resize a content box, move the mouse pointer to the circles on the edge of any content box, click and hold down the mouse button and drag the pointer. To delete a content box, move the mouse pointer to the box's edge until it forms a four-directional pointer, click and press "Delete." Use the commands on the Insert tab to add different kinds of content.

    • 5

Size your slides for different presentation styles by clicking the "Design" tab and clicking "Page Setup" or "Slide Orientation" from the Page Setup tab.

    Working with Themes

    • 6

Open an existing presentation or a new presentation file.

    • 7

Click on the "Design" tab. Click any theme from the "Themes" group; navigate through the available options by using the down arrow next to the theme icons. Click the down arrow with a line above it (the "More" button) to view all themes at once. When you move the mouse pointer over a theme and hold it there for a moment, you see a preview of how that theme affects the colors, fonts, background and layout of your slide. Select a theme.

    • 8

Change the colors, fonts or effects used in the theme from the text menus to the right of the theme icons.

    • 9

If you make changes to the colors, fonts or effects, you can create a new theme based on these changes by clicking the "More" button and then clicking "Save Current Theme...." This new theme will be available for all subsequent documents you work on.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you can create and save your own themes, you cannot create and save your own slide layouts. Approximate creating your own slide layouts by using "Duplicate Selected Slides" or "Reuse Slides" from the "New Slide" text menu to copy information from slide to slide, and then reuse the layout for new content.
