How to Set the Torque on a Clicker Torque Wrench

How to Set the Torque on a Clicker Torque Wrench thumbnail
Torque wrenches tighten nuts and bolts to a specific tightness.

A torque wrench is a tool that is used to tighten bolts and nuts. Torque wrenches are different from other wrenches in that they have a torque setting dial on the handle. This allows the user to tighten a bolt only to the manufacture's recommended torque, thus eliminating over tightening. Torque wrenches are available in both a beam variety and a clicker variety. Setting the proper torque on a clicker torque wrench takes only a few seconds to accomplish. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what torque setting you need to use by referring to the manufacture's instructions for the bolts or nuts that you are installing.

    • 2

Hold the body of the clicker torque wrench in one hand and place your other hand at the lower end of the torque wrench, which is where the adjustment dial is located.

    • 3

Turn the lower dial clockwise until it is at the proper torque setting. A digital window that is located just above the dial displays the torque numbers as you turn the dial. If you have an older clicker torque wrench, the torque numbers are located on the dial itself. Simply turn the dial until the appropriate number is aligned with the mark at the front of the torque wrench handle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most newer models of torque wrenches have both metric and English torque numbers to make setting the torque easier.
