How to Make a Faux Cake for a Baby Shower
A faux cake crafted from essential baby items serves double duty as a table centerpiece and a gift for the mother-to-be. While diaper cakes can be purchased pre-made, you can also use other items such as blankets, towels and washcloths to make a practical decoration for a baby shower. - Baby blanket
- Clear tape
- 2 baby bath towels
- Safety pins
- 4 to 6 washcloths
- Wooden dowel
- Ribbon
- Rattle
- Baby toys

Fold a 30-inch by 40-inch baby blanket in half and then in half again to create a rectangle of about 7.5 inches by 40 inches. Choose a thick fleece or quilted baby blanket to create a large base for your faux baby-shower cake.

Roll up the blanket tightly starting at one narrow end and then turn the rolled blanket onto its side to form the bottom tier of your faux cake. Wrap a piece of clear tape around the center of the tier to hold the rolled blanket together.

Fold two baby bath towels measuring about 11 inches by 9.5 inches in half to create two rectangles measuring 11 inches by 4.75 inches. Connect two short ends of the rectangles together with safety pins to create a long 22-inch by 4.75-inch rectangle.

Roll the towels up tightly beginning at one narrow end and secure the roll with tape to create the second tier of your faux cake.

Fold four to six 9-inch square baby washcloths in half and connect the folded washcloths end to end with safety pins. Roll up the washcloths and secure the roll with tape to create the top tier for your baby shower cake, which should be about 1 to 2 inches smaller in diameter than the second tier.

Stack the three faux cake tiers together with the largest tier on the bottom and the smallest tier on top. Insert a wooden dowel into the center of the cake to prevent the upper tiers from sliding off the cake. Trim the dowel so that it is flush with the top of the cake.

Wrap a length of ribbon around the center of each tier for decoration and cover the clear tape used to hold the cake together.

Insert the handle of a rattle into the top of the cake to serve as a cake topper. Decorate the baby shower cake with additional baby toys, teething rings or silk flowers attached with double-sided tape.

Baby bath towels and washcloths can often be purchased in a set that includes two bath towels and four to six washcloths. This set may save you money and will ensure that the middle and top tiers of the cake match perfectly.
