Becoming a private investigator in Maryland is fairly easy because all that is required is a license and a background check. The appropriate paperwork can be found through the Maryland State Police. However, it is encouraged that you also have some formal education or background in criminal justice.

      Enroll in a training program. While it is not required, the first thing you should do is get some sort of formal training in being a private investigator. In Maryland, many vocational schools, such as Strayer University, offer Associate's Degrees in Criminal Justice.

      Apply for a license. You will need to be licensed to be a private eye in any capacity. In Maryland, the state-mandated forms can be found online through the Maryland State Police. The state demands a completed application along with a set of fingerprints, either submitted electronically or via a fingerprint card. A fingerprint card can be obtained at any Maryland State Police barracks throughout the state.

      Pay the required fees. For a new investigator the state requires a $237.25 fee. For a private investigator starting his or her own incorporated agency, the state requires $412.25.
