How to Become a Private Pilot in Dallas, Texas

Private pilots must be licensed and trained to fly aircraft.

Private pilots in the state of Texas are highly trained professionals that meet an established number of practice hours in flight, education, medical and evaluation requirements before receiving their certification. Flight school training as well as licensing to operate aircraft is required for aspiring pilots. Flight schools within the state offer interested candidates full training, flight hours and practice tests to assist with acquiring a license. Willingness to participate in classroom training, complete the in-flight hours and receive hands-on instruction are requirements for a pilot in Texas.

Instructions

1. Pass a physical examination conducted by an FAA authorized aviation medical examiner. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that all aspiring private pilots acquire their third-class medical certificate before entering a flight school for instruction. To locate an FAA-authorized physician in the state of Texas, visit the FAA website (See Resources).

2. Consider professional aspirations. According to the FAA, there are approved and non-FAA-approved programs that provide excellent flight training. If you wish to pursue a career as a private pilot in Texas, you should opt for a FAA-approved flight program. If you intend to use your certification for leisure flying, you may opt to select a program that is not FAA-approved.

3. Register with your desired flight school that can prepare you for FAA testing. There are several flight schools in the state and nation that can prepare you with the education and flight practice time required for private pilots. ATP Flight School is a national training program with facilities in Houston and Dallas. US Flight Academy, located in Denton, Texas, also features private pilot training.

4. Prepare materials required for onsite training at the flight school facility. Most programs will require you bring your U.S. Passport, or other U.S. citizenship documentation, such as a birth certification to validate your citizenship status. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you may still be eligible to participate in the training program if you meet Transportation Security Administration regulations. Ensure you have received all of your training materials that you will also be required to bring with you to the training facility.

5. Complete the practice hours required of your flight program. All flight training schools will require you to have a specified number of flying hours to successfully complete the training program and prepare for FAA testing. While the total number of hours required may vary among programs and your career aspirations, most programs will require a minimum of 40 hours.

6. Take the private pilot FAA computerized written exam. This test will be issued by the flight school. If the test is issued at your desired flight school, you can inquire about the test by bringing your birth certificate, photo identification and your course materials or course completion certificate to your local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO).
