Select a wedding set that compliments the engagement ring.

The excitement of getting engaged starts with a ring and ends with a wedding band. Some suitors prefer to select an engagement ring and then select a wedding band; however, others like to purchase a wedding ring set where the band is designed to match and fit the engagement ring. Whether you purchase a predesigned wedding set or you need to build a wedding set for an engagement ring, you must first evaluate your budget and your fiancés personal style.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the engagement ring style. From modern to antique, your bride-to-be's engagement ring is as individual as she. The engagement ring sets the tone for not only the rings, but the wedding and beyond. Some brides love the look of the antique ring, surrounded by pave diamonds, whereas other brides prefer to make one bold statement with a thin band of platinum topped by a large round or princess-cut diamond.

Search for your wedding set using the same design elements you used to select the engagement ring. Find a wedding band that compliments the engagement ring and doesn't detract. The wedding band and engagement ring do not have to mirror each other; however you wouldn't want to select clashing styles such as an antique engagement ring with a modern band.

    • 3

Choose a ring shape and size to fit with the wedding band. The shape and size of the middle stone will dictate the type of wedding band you choose to create your wedding set. If you want diamonds or other precious stones in your wedding band, compare other shaped stones to the engagement ring. Try on bands with a variety of sizes and shapes to see how the rings looks together.

    • 4

Match the enagement ring thickness to the wedding band. For example, if the engagement ring setting is on a thin band, find an elegant wedding band of similar thickness so it doesn't overpower the engagement ring.

    • 5

Choose a band with a similar type of metal and finish as the engagement ring. Select the same weight and color to compliment the engagement ring. Look for a wedding band that has similar or complimentary finishes such as high polish or satin/brush finish.

    • 6

Select the bride's wedding band before choosing the groom's band. The bride's band will dictate what type of ring the groom receives. If her wedding set is based in polished platinum, the groom's ring should also be polished platinum. If the groom wants diamonds in his wedding ring, match the diamond shape to the bride's wedding band or engagement ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you've surprised her with the engagement ring, invite her to accompany you to select the wedding band.

  • Try on several rings before settling on the final wedding band set---you never know which ring will be "the one" until you try many.
