Adobe Photoshop has a powerful raster (bitmap) based graphics program. It has been one of the primary applications of graphics artist worldwide for many years. Thanks you the wide array of tools and capabilities it provides to the artist, Photoshop is used for many different types of projects, from making web page layouts to creating simple animations. But it is most commonly used to edit photographs, either to restore, retouch or alter them. One interesting thing you can do with Photoshop is alter a face in a photo so it looks scary.

Instructions

      Transfer the image that you want to work with onto your computer from a digital source like a camera or a SD card. Alternatively, you could scan it in, but make sure you set the scanner to a resolution (600dpi should do).

      Open Photoshop. Select “File” and click “Open.” In the dialog that pops up, browse to the image that you loaded and open it. Right-click on the background layer and select “Duplicate.”

      Select the duplicate image layer. Select “Filter” and click “Liquefy.” In the dialog, use the “Push” tool to move areas on one side of the face (such as the nose and eye) downward, to make it look as though that side of the face melted.

      Select the “Lasso” selection tool from the toolbar and use it to make a selection of the face in the image. Hold down the “Alt” key and use the tool to deselect the eyes and lips. Click on the “New Layer” icon.

      Select the “Brush” tool and at the top select a thin hard brush tip. Change the “Color” to a dark red. Paint in blood coming from the eyes and nose. Try to follow the contours of the face. Go to the “Layers” panel and change the “Blending Mode” to “Color Burn.”

      Use the “Lasso” selection tool to select the eyes in the image. Click on the “New Layer” icon and use the “Paint Bucket” tool to fill the selections with what ever color you want your eyes to glow.

      Click on the “FX” icon and choose “Outer Glow.” In the dialog, change the color to about the same red you used for the eyes. Set the “Spread” to 40 and the size to whatever looks right in the preview. Click “OK.” Select “File” and click “Save.” Name your file and save you work as a high resolution JPEG.
