How to Sand & Finish Pine Wood Floors
Sanding and finishing a pine wood floor is a task that will be fairly laborious and take several hours. This does not mean, however, that you should hire outside labor to complete the process, as you can certainly do it yourself with the proper tools, equipment, and procedure, saving you hundreds of dollars in the process. If you do not own a floor sander, you will need to rent one from a home improvement store in order to ensure that the floor is properly sanded before you can begin the finishing process. - Mask
- Goggles
- Floor sander
- Coarse-grit sandpaper
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Dusting mix
- Lacquer sealant
- Trowel
- Wood stain
- Paint bucket
- Wood stain brush
- Semi-gloss finish
- Lamb's wool applicator

Sand down the entire floor with the floor sander, using the coarse-grit sandpaper. Afterwards, sand the floor over one more time, using the fine-grit sandpaper. Sand in straight, parallel lines using smooth, fluid strokes.

Mix the dusting sand and lacquer sealant and trowel them into any cracks in the wood, smoothing the surface over with the trowel. Remove any excess mixture with the edge of the trowel.

Sand the floor again to remove any excess sealant.

Pour the wood stain into the paint bucket, and apply it to the floor with the wood stain brush. Hold the brush like a pencil, and paint in smooth strokes one board at a time, making sure to go with the grain of the wood.

Allow the wood stain to dry, then apply the semi-gloss finish with the lamb's wool applicator, again pushing the applicator with the direction of the wood in smooth, fluid strokes. The applicator will enable you to cover several boards at a time. Allow the semi-gloss finish to dry before walking on the surface.
