How to Decorate Curtains & Drapes
Although manufacturers offer a wide selection of decorative curtains and drapes to match nearly any room's decor including a specific window, color, design and/or fabric type, many people opt to decorate their curtains or drapes. Some people decorate for budget reasons while others want to create unique designs. Does this Spark an idea?

- Ribbon (optional)
- Beads or buttons (optional)
- Artificial flowers (optional)
- Sequins (optional)
- Rhinestones (optional)
- Hand sewing supplies or sewing machine
- Fabric-safe, long-lasting adhesive (optional)
- Stencils (optional)
- Fabric paint

Wash and dry your curtains or drapes per the instructions on the fabric's label.

Sketch a design showing the accessories or attachments that you want to add to your curtains or drapes. Attachments can include trim, ribbons, fabric, beads, buttons, artificial flowers, sequins and rhinestones.

Attach your accessories. Sew (by hand or machine) or glue the attachments to your curtains or drapes. For example, sew a fringed trim along the bottom of the fabric or a line of artificial flowers along the top seam below the curtain rod casing or ring holes. Or glue flat-back rhinestones to the fabric with a fabric-safe, long-lasting adhesive.

Sketch a design to paint onto your curtain or drape fabric. Use stencils if you wish.

Wash and dry your curtains or drapes per the fabric label instructions.

Lay your first curtain or drape on a flat work surface and apply your design. Apply paint onto the fabric's surface with brushes or sponges. If you're using stencils, secure the stencils to the fabric with pins before painting.

Repeat this process with your other curtains or drapes and then set aside to dry for 12 to 48 hours.

Attach any additional decorations as desired.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to alter your curtains or drapes, attach decorative hardware or other decorations such as decorative rods, rings, finials or wall mounts (sconces), rosettes, jewelry or tiebacks. Accent pre-printed or painted designs with metallic paints or attachments such as rhinestones.
Never shake fabric paints unless otherwise instructed on the paint package instructions, as doing so can create bubbles in the paint.
