How to Wear a Shawl for the Prom

How to Wear a Shawl for the Prom thumbnail
A shawl is an elegant addition to a prom dress.

For young women living in colder climates, dressing up for prom can be tricky. You want to look elegant, but you don't want to be cold. A shawl is the perfect solution. Those made of cashmere (sometimes called pashminas) will provide more warmth than those made of, for example, silk or satin. Put on your prom dress and try arranging your shawl in different ways before the big night to find the perfect fit for you and your dress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drape your shawl over your shoulders, letting the center of the shawl fall low on your back. Either tie it loosely in front or use a fancy pin or broach to secure it. This is a great way to add sparkle on prom night. You can also let the ends of the shawl drape freely on either side of your body, depending on how wide and long it is.

    • 2

Drape your shawl around your shoulders, allowing the tops of your shoulders and your collarbones to show. Use a pin to securely fasten the shawl to itself in front or off to one side. Use a larger or smaller broach depending on how much fabric you try to secure. Depending on the cut of your dress and whether or not it has straps, you could also attach the shawl to your dress.

    • 3

Drape the center of your shawl across your lower back and keep your arms bent to hold the shawl in the crook of each elbow. This is an elegant look, but it may limit your moves on the dance floor and isn't as warm as draping the shawl over your shoulders.

    • 4

Place one end of your shawl on one shoulder so that it ends at your chest. Then bring the other (longer) end around the back of your head, allowing the shawl to drape across your shoulder blades, and across the front of your body around the other shoulder and over to the first shoulder. Place the remaining (longer) end over the first shoulder so the end is hanging behind you. You can once again secure the ends with a broach or, if the shawl is not made of slippery material, arrange it so that it sits naturally with the long end hanging down your back.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are short, consider keeping your shawl above your waist.
