How to Change Your Name After a Divorce in Wyoming

How to Change Your Name After a Divorce in Wyoming thumbnail
After a divorce, you may want to change your name back to your maiden name or to a completely new name to totally break away from the marriage.

A divorce is a difficult legal proceeding to undergo. For particularly trying divorces, the spouse who took the last name of the former spouse may feel that the last name is still a connection to that difficult time. Changing your name after a divorce requires that you undergo further legal action; but the process is not long or convoluted in the state of Wyoming. With your name changed, you can move on with your life and start the healing process.

Instructions

    • 1

File a Petition for Name Change in the district court in Wyoming where you have a permanent residence. In the petition, list your current name, the name you want to have and the reason for changing it. Divorce is a valid reason for wanting a name change.

    • 2

Publish notice of your name change in a Wyoming newspaper that is published in your county. The notice must state that you intend to change your name and list your new name. It also must remain in the paper for four consecutive weeks.

    • 3

Comply with any court orders regarding hearings and schedules. Obtain an order granting your name change. Unless someone validly objects to the name change (such as if you were changing your name to avoid legal obligations), and unless you made a mistake in the original petition, the court will grant your request and give you an order indicating that you have a new name.

    • 4

Bring the court order you received to your local Secretary of State office in Wyoming to have your driver's license changed. Repeat this step at the Social Security Office (to change your Social Security records) and send copies of this order to places such as credit card companies, utility companies and any other entity that has information about you under your former name (such as doctor's offices or employers).
