Directions on How to Make a Betsy Ross Flag

There have been many flags in the history of America, but no flag seems to capture the energy and spirit of America quite like its original flag, the Betsy Ross flag. The Betsy Ross flag is characterized by 13 red and white stripes and a circle of 13 stars, which represents the 13 original colonies in America. You can recreate this flag easily using materials from any fabric store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out seven pieces of red fabric that each measure 2 inches wide by 24 inches long. Cut out six pieces of white fabric that each measure 2 inches wide by 24 inches long. Cut out two rectangles from blue fabric that each measure 14 inches wide by 16 inches long. Cut out 26 stars out of white fabric.

    • 2

Lay the strips of white and red fabric onto a flat surface, and pin them together in an alternating pattern. Place one of the blue rectangles in the upper left-handed corner of the flag, and remove the pins underneath. Pin the rectangle onto the flag. Turn the flag over, and repeat this with the second blue rectangle, but instead of placing it in the left-hand corner you will place it in the upper right-hand corner. Place 13 white stars in a circle inside one of the blue rectangles, pinning them down. Turn the flag over and repeat this with the remaining 13 stars.

    • 3

Thread a needle and carefully sew together the stripes of the flag, removing the pins as you sew. Sew the edges of one of the blue rectangles to the stripes, and remove the pins. Turn the flag over, and sew down the edges of the opposing blue rectangle. Finish the flag by sewing around the edges of each white star.
