Unlocking a cell phone causes it to work with other networks.

Like all cell phones, for the Samsung C160 to work, it must be connected to a network provider. For the C160 to work on other networks, it must be unlocked. Unlocking the phone means removing the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card the provider puts in the phone, adding a new one from the new provider and entering a code specific to the phone that will tell the phone to accept the new network.

Instructions

    • 1

Request the C160's IMEI code by contacting the provider's customer service. If you've been a customer long enough, the provider may send the IMEI code, or the code identifying the specific phone, in a few days. Usually customers have to fulfill at least a portion of the length of their contract with a provider before the provider will provide the IMEI code to allow the phone to work with other providers.

    • 2

Turn off the C160. Remove the SIM card, which is located near the battery. Insert the new provider's SIM card.

    • 3

Turn the C160 back on. The phone will detect the new card and ask for the IMEI code. Enter the code. Now the C160 will operate using the new network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes the phone owner may have to pay the provider for the new IMEI code. After entering an unlock code and accessing a new network, not all of the phone's original features will work. The phone might be able to make calls but not go online, for example. This is due to the differences in data packages providers offer. Before unlocking the Samsung C-160 research how use of another network will effect the phone.
