How to Measure to Hang Drapery Rods
Measuring a window for a drapery rod takes little time, though it's important to do it correctly. Otherwise, your drapery won't hang properly. Make sure you measure each spot at least twice to check for accuracy. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure 8 inches above the window. Start at the top of the frame and mark 8 inches up. Do this in at least three places, such as each end and the middle. Mark each spot.
-
2
Check that the places you've measured are straight. Use a level to check the marks.

3
Measure 4 inches out from the top side of the window frame. Do this on both sides of the frame. If you have a large drapery, you may have to measure 6 inches out. A drapery makes a window look larger, though if it's too big for the window, it can dwarf it. Make sure the drapery doesn't exceed 1 foot on either side of the window.
-
4
Hold the drapery up to the markings. Check to see that the drapery hangs properly. The drapery fabric should not pool at the floor, but it also needs to hit the floor. If it doesn't touch the floor, it's too short.
-
5
Adjust the measurements if the drapery does not hang properly. If the fabric is too short, measure an inch below the current markings. If the fabric is too long and pools, measure the excess fabric. Add that to the top of the measurements, but do not exceed 1 foot.
-
6
Account for a valance if you are using one with the drapery. The valance hangs above the drapery rod, so it's important to leave enough space above the rod for the valance. Measure the height of the valance and then measure that high above the spot for the valance.
