How to Remove Rust From Metal Scratches

Removing rust from metal scratches requires patience.

A scratch in a metal object often rusts because the scratch penetrates protective paint and sealers, exposing the bare metal to moisture. This rust is difficult to remove because it exists below the surface of the metal. You must get an abrasive object into the scratch to remove the rust. This requires manual labor and patience. Using the right tools will increase the speed and effectiveness of removal.

Things You'll Need

• Steel wool pad
• Sponge
• Towel
• Wire brush

Instructions

1. Scrub the scratch with a steel wool pad several times fast. Make several passes over the scratch with the pad and watch to see if rust particles fall from the scratch.

2. Rinse the scratched area with water to clear away rust particles and expose the condition of the scratch.

3. Scrub the scratch with the steel wool pad again. Draw the steel wool right along the scratch line. Dig deep into the scratch by pressing your fingers into the pad, forcing the metal fibers to dig into the scratch.

4. Rinse the scratch with water and sponge again to clear the scratch of dirt and rust particles. Dry the metal with a towel. Then continue to scrub the scratch with steel wool and clean it, until the rust is removed.

5. Brush the scratch with a wire metal brush. Angle the brush fibers into the scratch to remove all of the remaining rust. Make one to two passes with the brush at a time until the scratch shines and shows no sign of rust.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not brush too vigorously because the wire brush will cut into the metal around the scratch.
