How to Machine Sew Sequins
Machine sewing sequin trim is a time-saving technique that is acceptable for use on costumes, even though the stitches are much more visible than if the sequins were sewn on by hand. It is important that machine sewing sequins is saved for parts of the costume where the stitches will be undetected, such as along the edges of the garment. Hand sewing is still most appropriate for sequins along the bodice, as they will be much more visible.

1
Insert a large number 16 needle into the sewing machine and lubricate it well to ease the process of sewing the sequin chain. Larger needles will more easily go through the metal sequins and will be less likely to weaken or break during use.
-
2
Pin the sequin chain in the precise location where you'll be sewing it on the garment. Place the pins through the center of the sequins to avoid making additional holes in the metal embellishments.

3
Line the sequin chain up with the sewing machine so that the sequins run through smoothly and do not catch on the needle---this could result in a choppy sewing job or a broken needle. To ensure that the sequins are going through the machine in the right direction, rub your hand over the sequins from back to front. When lined up correctly, your hand should run smoothly over the sequin chain. Run your hand over the sequins in the opposite direction and notice how it catches on the outer edge of each sequin.

4
Sew a stitch down the center of single-row sequin chains from top to bottom. If there are two rows of sequins, sew two stitches, each 1/4 inch from the outside edge of the chain.
-
5
Sew the entire length of the sequin chain on the sewing machine in a straight line. When the sequins have been secured to the garment successfully, remove the pins carefully.
