How to Get DSL If You Don't Have a Telephone thumbnail
You can have high-speed DSL Internet without a landline telephone.

In the past, those who wanted DSL service had to subscribe to telephone service as well. Even if you had other means for a telephone, you had to get this service to enjoy the features of fast Internet access. You can now receive DSL Internet access without having to having an active phone. You will need, however, a physical phone line to get DSL even if it is not active. DSL broadband service uses the telephone line to reach your home but does not require an active phone. Not having active telephone service does not affect the speed of the DSL connection, but the whole process is set up through your local telephone company.

Use a phonebook to locate your local DSL or telephone companies. Call the companies and express your interest in "standalone," or "naked," DSL. These terms refer to DSL that does not come bundled with telephone service. If you choose to later, you may have DSL service through one phone company and a telephone service through another. Realize, however, that "standalone DSL" generally costs the same as a DSL bundle package with telephone service. Call various vendors to make sure they offer "standalone" or "naked" DSL service before committing yourself to one company.

Review the packages with your telephone or DSL company to fit your budget. If you plan to use the internet just to check email and news, it is best to stay between the medium or lower tiers when choosing a DSL speed. Stick with the medium speed if you will use it for email and news but will have more than one computer connected to the Internet. Consider upgrading to the highest tier if you will play video games or watch movies. Write down the prices while calling around because prices and speeds will vary depending on the availability and your location. Consider all features along with the pricing before picking the company you will go with.

Schedule a time for the installer to come out and set up your new service. Be sure your computer and desk is set up near a telephone outlet. The DSL connection will need to plug directly into a nearby telephone outlet. You may have to use "filters" provided from your DSL company to use a telephone if you later decide to subscribe to a landline. Plan your schedule accordingly during the day of installation, because someone must be home and will usually have to be over the age of 18.
