How to Sketch Male Anime Figures
A common issue among artists who favor the anime style (and even fans who appreciate it) is that it can be hard to tell the difference between males and females. Though the steps to drawing men and women are very similar, there are few things that make men's bodies unique. Drawing men requires more defined lines and broader shapes, and close attention to musculature and how everything connects. Still, like most things, sketching men in anime style can be broken down into some basic steps.

1
Draw your "action line." This is a single vertical line, about as long as you want the body to be. It will help you determine what kind of pose your drawing has. The curvier the line, the more dynamic your pose will be. As a rough guideline, the very top of the line will be the top of the figure's head, and the bottom will be where he is resting most of his weight (if standing).
-
2
Draw a circle to represent the head, around the top part of the line.
-
-
3
Draw a trapezoid shape, narrower part facing down, just under the circle.
-
4
Sketch another circle around the narrower part of the trapezoid, to give you a guideline for the hips. It should be a little narrower than the top part of the tapezoid; unlike women, men's hips are not usually proportional to their shoulders.
-
5
Add the arms and legs. The legs will be coming from the bottom corners of the trapezoid. Look at your action line--the leg the character is resting most of his weight on should follow that line. The arms should be drawn from the two upper points of your trapezoid. Take the personality of your drawing into account when positioning the arms; that will help you decide on the overall pose.
-
6
Flesh out the drawing. Use the shapes you've just made (often known as your "skeleton") as a guide, draw the face from the circle and the neck, torso and hips from the trapezoid and bottom circle. Male waists will slope inward from the ribs, though not as dramatically as female's do.
