How to Fax International Long-Distance

How to Fax International Long-Distance thumbnail
Research different companies for international faxing.

Facsimiles are data transmission sent over telephone wires. Domestic faxing is relatively common. International faxing is a bit uncommon and can be costly. If you need to send an international fax you should research different prices--even if you own a fax machine. An international call can be quite costly, depending on the country where the fax is intended.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local or long distance carrier if you own a fax machine. Ask about the international calling rates for the country where you intend to send the fax. A representative at the telephone company should be able to at least ballpark a one-time call price to a foreign country.

Visit a local office that provides faxing services, such as UPS or FedEx/Kinkos. Typical domestic, long-distance faxes cost between $1.50 and $3 per page. International rates are more expensive. Contact a local provider for actual rates. You will, however, be guaranteed a confirmation if you use one of these companies.

Research online, international faxing services. These are designed for businesses mostly, but you can pay for a one-time international fax. These companies assign you a unique email address. Such companies include: Nextiva, RingCentral and MyFax (see Resources for company websites). You must upload a document to be faxed, attach it to an email, then send it to the online company. It handles the fax and sends you a confirmation.

Fax the documents. If you fax online, type the entire international fax number with the country code first. If you physically fax, place the documents face-down in the receiving tray. Enter the number "1" then the country code. You can then enter the rest of the fax number. Check the fax number on the screen. If you use the wrong number, you may need to pay for another international call (especially if you are faxing from home). Push "fax." (See References for a list of country codes.)

Get a copy of the confirmation fax. This is critical. This confirms the transmission. You may even want to double-check its arrival by contacting the receiving party via email, if possible.
