How to Make Hand Crafted Neckties
Neckties create a clean finishing touch to professional attire; business men and women benefit from the addition of a classic necktie. Manufacturers produce neckties in endless combinations of colors and designs likely to fulfill anyone's taste. However, consider making a handcrafted necktie yourself. Produce elegant neckties that match perfectly to your personal, professional wardrobe.
Things You'll Need
- 1 square yard of fabric
- 1 3/4 yards of wool
- Necktie pattern
- Label
- Sharp scissors or rotary cutters
- Silk pins
- Ruler
- Marking pencil
- Thread
- Sewing needle
- Iron
Instructions
-
Cut the Fabric
-
1
Unroll the silk and smooth the wrinkles with your hands. Place the pattern on the silk and draw a line around the edges using the marking pencil.
-
2
Cut the pattern line on a 45-degree bias angle for the silk and wool pieces. Use either the scissors or rotary cutter.
-
-
3
Set the iron to the silk setting and press the silk. Do not iron the silk because the iron will leave shiny marks.
Put the Pieces Together
-
4
Draw lines on the backside of the silk where the tipping piece will be sewn on the main part of the necktie.
-
5
Sew the bottom edge of the tie together. Face the right side of the tipping piece to the right side of the main part of the necktie. Put a few stitches in to hold the pieces together.
-
6
Open the fabric and lay it down flat. Sew along the drawn lines closest to the edge of the fabric on both sides of the triangle.
-
7
Sew across at a 45-degree angle to make the point of the triangle. Sew the inside corners and the small ends of the tip into the necktie using the same technique.
-
8
Turn the top and bottom ends inside-out. Sew the three main pieces together.
Create the Tie
-
9
Place the wool lining in the tie; fit it snugly in the top and bottom ends of the necktie.
-
10
Fold the edges of the necktie to the center over the lining. The second fold overlaps the first fold. Hold the folds together by placing silk pins along the length of the necktie.
-
11
Fold the keeper piece into a tub and sew it together. Place it inside the fold and sew it into the necktie. Flatten the keeper and sew both sides to the necktie, but don't sew through the necktie.
-
12
Sew the folds of the necktie together using a hidden stitch or saddle stitch. Use a slip stitch loop at the bottom of the necktie for flexibility.
-
13
Sew the label across the folds on the back side of the tie. Sew the edges completely so the label doesn't come off.
