Make a wand from a chopstick for pretend play.

Whether you have little fairies or wizards in your midst, many children enjoy pretend play with wands. Help your child make her imaginative play more real by making a wand from a chopstick. A chopstick makes a suitable wand for a little hand. With only a bit of creative embellishment, your child's wand will be ready to use to cast magical spells and incantations for enthralling magical play.

Things You'll Need

  • Chopstick
  • Air-drying clay (any color)
  • Chenille stems
  • Craft glue
  • Felt
  • Fabric pen
  • Scissors
  • Sequins
  • Glitter glue

Instructions

    • 1

Manipulate a small portion of clay in your hands that will fit roughly into your child's hand. Form the clay around the wide end of the chopstick as a handle, molding it snugly so it forms an oval shape on the end of the chopstick (this will be the handle of the wand).

    • 2

Place a small amount of glue onto one end of a chenille stem. Insert the chenille stem into the clay handle (before the clay hardens) on the end of the clay that is closest to the length of the chopstick.

    • 3

Allow the clay to air-dry until it is sufficiently hard before you proceed with the wand project. This may take several hours--consult the clay package for specific drying times. The clay will harden over the chopstick with the chenille stem inserted into the top end of the clay.

    • 4

Twist the chenille stem around the length of the chopstick until you come to the top of the chopstick. Make the chenille stem twist tightly onto the chopstick and glue the top end of the chenille stem to the top of the chopstick. Allow the glue to dry before proceeding.

    • 5

Draw two identical stars on the felt with the fabric pen. Make the stars with five or six points and make the distance across the center of the stars from point to point between 3 and 4 inches. Cut out the two felt stars with the scissors.

    • 6

Apply craft glue to one side of each star. Affix the stars to each other over the top 2 inches of the tip of the chopstick to create the tip of the wand. Allow the craft glue to dry completely before proceeding.

    • 7

Decorate the felt stars by gluing sequins to them and adding glitter glue decorations. Allow the glue and glitter glue to dry completely before using the chopstick wand.
