Winding Instructions for a Singer Treadle Bobbin
In the 19th and early 20th century, treadle sewing machines were commonplace. During this era most people made their own clothing, bed linens and curtains. With the introduction of the electric sewing machine these old treadle machines were relegated to attics, storage sheds or occasional pieces of furniture in an out-of-the-way room. Today more people are moving toward green living and a self-sustaining lifestyle and the treadle sewing machine is making a comeback. Unfortunately the operating manuals have not survived and learning to use these machines is daunting.
Instructions

1
Release the clutch (hold the hand wheel and turn the inner wheel toward you). This disengages the needle bar mechanism.
-
2
Locate the bobbin winder. It is usually on the lower right side just to the left of the hand wheel, but some are located under the cross arm.
-
-
3
Place a spool of thread on the thread pin with the thread coming off the back of the spool.
-
4
Take the thread through the thread guide or guides leading to the bobbin winder.
-
5
Tie the thread around the bobbin and insert the bobbin into the bobbin winder and treadle until the bobbin is full.

Tips & Warnings
If your bobbin winder assembly doesn't have a guide arm to help it wind evenly, guide the thread with your finger.

Is it ok to wind bobbins on my electric machine to then use on my Singer treadle? I have trouble with the bobbin winding mechanism and suspect that there's a part missing. I'm not sure if the tensions would differ too much.
