How to Make a Memorial Flower Bouquet

How to Make a Memorial Flower Bouquet thumbnail
Create a beautiful memorial bouquet.

People create memorial bouquets for many reasons. They may be to comfort the family of a lost loved one or to decorate the headstone right after the funeral. Others make memorial headstones each year for the graves of late family members. Making them yourself means that you have total control over what kinds of flowers go into the bouquet and how they are arranged. You can put in your loved one's favorite flowers or favorite color flowers, making sure it is something they would like. Just be sure to check with the cemetery for flower regulations; many cemeteries don't allow glass or breakable containers for flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Wedge a brick of floral foam into a plastic flower pot. Make sure to get a pot with no drain holes. The foam should be large enough to fill most of the pot. If it squishes out of shape a little when you put it in, don't worry, it's supposed to. Fill the pot about halfway with water and let it soak into the foam.

    • 2

Lay out your flowers. Separate them by size and length, placing the tallest flowers to one side, the largest flowers to another and set the smallest flowers aside for later. Lilies of any kind, white roses and painted daisies are all good choices.

    • 3

Select your tallest flower and snip about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the stem at an angle. Push it into the center of the floral foam. Place two or three more tall flowers around it, arranging them at different heights.

    • 4

Cut the stems of your larger flowers as in Step 3. Push them into the foam around the edges, making them the base of the design. They can hang a little over the lip of the arrangement, but make sure to leave space between them and the central flowers.

    • 5

Fill in the rest of the space with small and medium flowers, cutting their stems as in Step 3. Once arranged, place the flower pot in the middle of a piece of decorative fabric or paper and fold it up around the pot to disguise the plastic. Tie it with ribbon or raffia, attaching a tag with a message to your loved one.
