How to Install a Motor Coupling on a Washing Machine
Installing a motor coupling on a washing machine is a fairly simple process that you can do in about a half-hour. The motor coupling is made of plastic and rubber, and because it is constantly moving while the washer is operating, it can eventually wear out or break, requiring that its replacement. You can install a new motor coupling yourself and save the time and expense of calling a repairman to install the part. Does this Spark an idea?

Unplug the electrical cord of the washing machine from the electrical outlet before attempting to install the motor coupling.

Detach the end caps on the control console by pressing in on the caps with your thumbs and pulling back on the caps to remove them from the console.

Unfasten the screws on the front of the control console with a screwdriver and flip the console back so that it rests on the rear hinges.

Unplug the lid switch from the rear of the top lid by hand and pry the metal clips off the top with a screwdriver, lifting them up to unfasten the top lid.

Pull the top off the washer base and set it aside, locating the water pump and motor at the bottom of the cabinet.

Slide the two metal clips off the water pump, lifting the pump off the motor shaft and unplug the motor wire harness from the motor by hand.

Tip the motor shaft sideways, unfastening the metal clips off the motor with a screwdriver and remove any pieces of old coupling from the motor and water pump with a screwdriver.

Fasten the motor wire harness back into the motor by hand and slide a white plastic coupler onto the motor shaft with the prongs facing away from the motor.

Slide a black rubber coupler over the motor shaft so the holes in the black rubber line up with the prongs in the white plastic coupler.

Place a second white plastic coupler over the motor shaft with the prongs facing toward the black rubber coupler and tilt the motor shaft back up.

Slide the metal clips over the motor and put the water pump back onto the motor shaft, securing it with metal clips.

Place the top lid back over the washer base, securing it with the metal clips, snapping the clips into place to hold the top lid down.

Plug the lid switch into the rear of the top lid and flip the control console back down over the top, securing it with screws.

Attach the end caps to the control console by snapping them onto the console by hand and plug the washing machine electrical cord into the outlet.
