Access a High Speed Internet Connection

A high-speed Internet connection is generally faster than the usual 56 Kilobytes dial up connection. It can be DSL, cable, satellite, or a wireless signal. DSL, satellite, and cable Internet connections can be made wireless with a wireless router. You can access high-speed wireless Internet by getting it at your home, accessing it at a place of employment or school, or getting it for free around town at various locations.

      Call an Internet company and tell them you would like Internet service.

      Choose the type of Internet you would like, such as DSL, cable, or satellite. These can often be almost the same, but prices and speeds differ in each location, so check the speed and the price and choose what fits you best.

      Connect a wireless router to your modem if your modem is not already wireless. Turn both of these on.

      Turn on your computer and choose "view available wireless networks" in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. Choose your connection and click "Connect." Enter a password if you have set one up to make the connection secure.

    At School or work

      Take your computer to your school or to work if you know there is a wireless high speed Internet connection there.

      Turn on your computer and click "view available wireless networks." Choose the network to connect.

      Enter a password when prompted. You can get this from your school officials or your boss.

    Free Wi-Fi

      Locate a place that offers free WiFi. This is a high speed wireless Internet connection. Places that commonly offer it include, but are not limited to, coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, libraries, and government buildings.

      Take your computer to one of these places.

      Turn your computer on and search for the signal by clicking on "Available wireless networks." Choose one to connect to. Enter a network key or password when prompted. At a public business or building, you can obtain this from whomever is in charge.
