How to Adjust a Monitor's Resolution

A high monitor resolution shows more detail, but individual items appear smaller onscreen. A low monitor resolution shows less detail, but items appear bigger. These instructions are for Windows 98.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer Monitors
  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

    From the Start menu, click Settings and then Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click Display.

  3. Step 3

    Click the Settings tab.

  4. Step 4

    Select the monitor that you want to change if you have more than one monitor.

  5. Step 5

    Move the Screen Area slider from left to right until your display is set to the resolution or screen size that you want.

  6. Step 6

    Click Apply to see what the new resolution will look like.

  7. Step 7

    Click OK to accept the changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your monitor and your video adapter determine whether or not you will be able to change your screen resolution.
  • If you are adding a second monitor to your system, check the box labeled Extend My Windows Desktop Onto This Monitor.

on 4/28/2007 After increasing the resolution, if the display it too small, you can use the monitor options to increase the width and height to fit it to the monitor viewable area

on 11/22/2005 Right click on desktop, select Configure Desktop, select Display from left side, choose resolution on right side labeled Screen Size. If you have multiple monitors, you can select which monitor to adjust.

on 11/22/2005 If you go to a larger resolution and feel that the desktop images are too small, right-click in an empty area of the desktop, go to Properties and then Effects and click on
Use Large Icons.
