How to Remove Water From Oil in Cars

Cars and trucks use an internal lubrication and cooling system. Coolant and engine oil are separated into different ports that flow side by side throughout the engine. The coolant and engine oil come very close together at the engine head. The engine head is cooled by coolant and the valves are lubricated by engine oil. The engine head has a gasket that makes a seal between it and the engine block. The gasket can fail, causing engine coolant to mix with the engine oil. If this occurs, the coolant will need to be removed from the engine oil. The oil will not lubricate properly when mixed with oil.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive socket
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil filter
  • 5 quarts engine oil
  • Crescent wrench
  • Oil drain pan

Instructions

    • 1

Position the drain pan under the oil pan. The oil pan will be located under the vehicle directly under the engine block forward of the transmission.

    • 2

Remove the oil drain plug using the crescent wrench and turning counter-clockwise.

    • 3

Allow the oil and coolant emulsion to drain until there is just a slow drip coming from the drain port.

    • 4

Replace the drain plug using the crescent wrench and turning clockwise.

    • 5

Remove the oil filter using the oil filter wrench and turning counter-clockwise. The oil filter will be located forward and above the oil pan.

    • 6

Replace the oil filter by turning the new filter by hand clockwise until it is hand tight. Turn the oil filter 1/2 to 3/4 more clockwise.

    • 7

Open the hood and locate the oil fill cap. The oil fill cap is located on the right valve cover gasket. The cap has a yellow top with a picture of an oil can on it. Open the cap by turning it counter-clockwise.

    • 8

Pour all 5 quarts of engine oil into the fill port and reinstall the cap by turning it clockwise.

    • 9

Start the engine and allow it to come up to operating temperature.

    • 10

Locate the engine oil dipstick and remove from the tube. The oil dipstick is located to the right of the engine near the firewall. Wipe the oil from the dipstick and replace into the tube. Pull the dipstick and look for separations in the oil on the dipstick. If there are no separations, all the water has been flushed from the system and the procedure is complete. If there are still separations between the oil on the dipstick, the oil will need to be flushed again until the dipstick shows solid oil.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once all the water is removed, the oil filter will need to be replaced.

  • Do not operate the vehicle until all the water is removed from the oil. The oil will not lubricate properly and the engine will seize up.

  • The radiator fluid will probably need to be flushed as well. When the fluids mix, they usually both need replacing.

  • Do not attempt this procedure until the engine is completely cool. Working on a hot engine will cause severe burns.
