How to Calculate Your College Grade Point Average

Grade point averages, or GPAs, are used in college to rank students in their specific class. Having a good class rank and GPA in college is very important, as it will increase your chances of getting a job or into a good graduate program. Many people do not know how to calculate a GPA even if they know their own grades. Calculating GPA is very simple, and uses a grade point system per grade, and bases this average over how many credits the student took. An A is worth 4 grade points, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1, D- .7, and F 0.

Instructions

1. Convert your grade in a class into grade points using the conversion information above. For example, if you got an A- in a class, you would earn 3.7 grade points.

2. Multiply the grade points you earned in a class by the number of credits the class is worth. When you enroll in a college course, it will tell you how many credits the class is when you sign up. For example, if you enrolled in a class worth three credits, and got a B, then you would get nine (three credits x three grade points). Do this for each class.

3. Add up all the grade points, then add up all the credits. Divide the grade point total by the credit total to get your grade point average. For example, if all the grade points added up to 34, and the credits added up to 10, your GPA would be 3.4 for that semester (34/10).
