Make sure your Toshiba 120GB external hard drive is properly connected to your computer. The external hard drive comes with a USB data transfer cable that allows you to transfer data to and from the hard drive already in your computer. If this cable is not properly connected to both the computer and the drive, the Windows operating system will not be able to recognize the external hard drive and you will not be able to use it.

Make sure your Toshiba 120GB external hard drive is plugged into a wall outlet. Because the hard drive is external, it will not operate off of the power supply in your computer like an internal hard drive would. The power cable that is attached to the drive will need to be plugged into a wall outlet and the power switch on the hard drive will need to be flipped to "ON" for the drive to work properly.

Click "Device Manager" to open the Windows operating system Device Manager.

Scroll down to and expand the listing for "USB Controllers" (also called "universal serial bus controllers"). This will show you a complete list of all USB ports on your computer. Use this list to make sure all USB ports are currently operational. If the USB port you have used to connect your Toshiba 120GB hard drive is not operational, plug the drive into a different USB port on your computer to fix the issues you were having with it.
