How to Locate the Alternator on a Jeep Cherokee

Before you can replace or repair the alternator in your 2001 Jeep Cherokee, you have to find it. Jeep did a great job of hiding it on the Cherokee so if you do not immediately see it do not feel bad. You are not the first to scratch your head and wonder where they put it. The alternator has a long life under normal use in most cases and, because of that; removal is typically not a real concern in the placement of the alternator.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of your Jeep Cherokee and support it with the prop rod. The rod runs along the driver's side fender; lift it up to engage a hole in the bottom of the hood marked "Prop Rod."

    • 2

Position yourself on the passenger's side of the Jeep looking into the engine compartment from the side. You may have to lean over the fender to see down into engine compartment clearly.

    • 3

Look straight down into the engine compartment at the front of the engine. On the passenger's side of the engine, way down at the bottom, you will see the alternator. It is a round, metallic object with a set of wires on the back and a belt running over a pulley on the front. It is close to the wheel well and sits just above the undercover that is on the bottom of the Jeep's engine compartment.
