How to Make & Schedule Future Payments Online

Online bill pay services offer convenience and eliminate the need for paper checks. They also save you money in postage. However, making payments online requires several steps. Before you can make and schedule payments, you must enroll in your bank's online banking program. This process allows you to select your own user identification and a password. Once you complete the enrollment you may have to wait several days while your bank sets up your account before making and scheduling payments.

      Go to your bank's website. Log in using your user Identification and password. Find the tab that says "Online Banking" and click it. Then click on the "Bill Pay Service" tab.

      Enter the name of the creditor you wish to pay, the date of the payment and the amount of the payment. Click the "Submit" button to process the payment. Select the checking account from which you want to withdraw funds. Enter the bank's nine-digit routing number and your checking account number.

      Schedule payments for future dates. Next to each payment amount will see a calendar. Click on it. Choose the date for your future payments. Select a one-time payment a recurring payment. You can schedule weekly, monthly or quarterly payments.

      Review the payment process. Some creditors will receive payments by mail and others will receive them electronically. The creditor's capability will determine how payments are sent. Payments sent electronically can take three business days; payment sent by mail take up to six business days. Payment processing time frames vary from bank to bank.
