Put on safety glasses and gloves. Place plastic drop cloths over doorways or furniture. Removing tile can be a dusty job. Protect surrounding kitchen cabinets as necessary.
-
2
Inspect the tile countertops to see how they were installed. In some cases, the tile sits on top of laminate countertops. If this is the case, you may be able to simply unscrew or unclamp the countertops and remove the tile countertop in one piece.

Use a chisel and a hammer to remove several of the tiles from the top of the countertop. Once you have removed several tiles you will know what is underneath them. Tile applied to plywood or cement backer board may be unscrewed once you find the screw heads under the tile. If a mortar bed was used for the countertops, chisel down until you reach the end of the bed. At this point, you may be able to slip a pry bar under the mortar and rip away large chunks of tile and mortar.

4
Clean and vacuum the area. Replace the countertops.
