How to Write a Cover Letter for a Sales Clerk Job

Many sales clerk job postings now request a cover letter to accompany a job application. While this can seem like a complicated or tedious task, writing a cover letter for a sales clerk job is fairly straightforward. With just a bit of time, you can come up with a polished cover letter that will complement your sales clerk job application well.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the following contact information at the top right corner of your letter: full legal name, address, phone number, email address. I should look like this:

      Your Name
      1200 Street Dr.
      Your City, Your State 12345
      (000) 123-4567
      email@domain.com

    • 2

Place the name, job title and address of the person the cover letter is for underneath your contact information, but aligned to the left side of the page. For example:

      Mr. Store Boss
      Store Manager
      Name of Store
      32400 Store St.
      The City, The State 12345

Address the person you're writing to directly, and use a greeting. Do not use a generic greeting such as “To Whom This May Concern” or “Dear Sir of Madam.” Instead, say “Dear Mr. Adam:” or “Dear Ms. Riley:”.

    • 4

Open the letter with a description of the job you're applying for and the experience you have in that position, including the duties and responsibilities you've previously been given.

Example: “Please consider my enclosed application for the position of lead sales clerk. I believe I am qualified for this position, as I have five years of experience as a retail sales clerk. During this time, I was responsible for cash handling, monitoring inventory and providing customer service.”

    • 5

Include in the letter any applicable accomplishments or contributions you've made in your previous job positions. Place this information in a new paragraph, after the opening of your cover letter. Example:

“At my most recent place of employment, I set a new monthly sales record and was then promoted to head sales associate.”

    • 6

Close the cover letter by reiterating your purpose and requesting an interview for the sales clerk position. You can write something to the effect of “I would appreciate the chance to further discuss my qualifications during an interview.”
