Regular maintenance helps keep your car in good condition.

Fuel filters work to clean the fuel of any dirt before it flows into your fuel injector. You should be able to locate the fuel filter on a 1999 Ford Ranger easily, but it will take time and effort to replace the filter. Still, the procedure can be done in as little as 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel quick release tool (Ford)
  • Gloves
  • Protective eye wear

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood and look for your fuse box. On a 1999 Ford Ranger, the fuse box is on the driver's side, right behind the air filter housing unit. Disconnect the fuel pump relay and set it aside. Turn the ignition. If your Ranger does not start, go on to the next step. If your Ranger does start, allow your engine to idle until it runs out of gas.

    • 2

Slide underneath your Ranger near the driver's side door. Locate your fuel filter. It is a silver round container. On a 1999 Ford Ranger, the fuel filter is under your car almost directly beneath the driver's seat. It is located near the fuel tank mounted on the frame rail.

    • 3

Inspect your fuel filter. You should notice that your fuel filter has a fuel hose running from each end. Take your quick release tool and place it onto the hose at one end of the fuel filter. Apply pressure to the quick release tool until it releases the clips attaching your fuel hose to your fuel filter. Do the same for the fuel hose attached to the other end of your fuel filter. Set the clips aside for later use.

    • 4

Remove your old fuel filter from the fuel filter bracket by simply sliding it out. Replace the old fuel filter with a new fuel filter. One that will fit a 1999 Ford Ranger is an Az fuel filter (part number FF869). Make sure that as you are installing your new fuel filter, the arrow on filter is pointed forward towards the front of your Ranger.

    • 5

Reattach your fuel hose to the fuel filter by sliding the fuel hose onto the fuel filter. You should hear a click as the fuel hose connects to the fuel filter.

    • 6

Get the fuel hose clips that you removed earlier and reattach them to the fuel hose. Go to your fuse box and reconnect the fuse pump relay.

Tips & Warnings
