How to Wean From a Bottle to a Sippy Cup With Whole Milk
Some babies have more difficulties than others when it's time to transition from a bottle to a sippy cup and begin drinking whole milk. Some babies may start using a sippy cup at the age of 6 months, but the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend giving your baby whole milk until he is at least a year old. Babies who derive comfort from sucking may not readily take to the spout of a sippy cup. Be prepared for a time of trial and error when weaning your child.

Buy a sippy cup with a soft spout so that it will feel similar to the nipple of a bottle.

Place half of a serving of whole milk in your child's bottle at feeding time and the other half in the sippy cup. Allow your child to drink from the bottle, and then offer him the sippy cup.

Fill the sippy cup with a little more milk at each feeding and the bottle with a little less until he is drinking completely from the cup. For example, decrease the amount of whole milk you put in the bottle by two tablespoons at each feeding and increase the amount you place in the cup by two tablespoons until all of the milk is in the sippy cup.

Tips & Warnings
Dip the spout of the sippy cup in milk so that your child will understand that he can use the cup to get milk.
Try different cups. If your baby won't accept the first one, try again. Eventually he will begin using it.
Demonstrate how to use the sippy cup if he doesn't seem to understand how it works. If you don't want to use the same cup, use a different one.
Be patient. It may take a couple of weeks for your child to transition. All children are different. Just continue to offer the cup, and try different cups to find one he likes.
