How to Increase the Download Speed for Netzero Hi-Speed

Netzero provides dialup to the Internet.

Netzero provides a "high speed" option for dialup users. Netzero is an Internet service provider (ISP) that maintains affordable dialup options for users who do not have broadband capabilities in their area. Modem access to the Internet is slower than a typical DSL or cable connection, but there are some ways to improve performance and avoid slowness issues when downloading websites.

Instructions

1. Remove any phone splitters and connect your modem cable directly to the phone jack. Splitters are used to allow more than one phone cable into one phone jack. This can cause degradation of your modem signal, which slows down the download rate.

2. Remove modem compression. Modem compression reduces the size of your Internet packets, but it can also degrade the download rate. To remove compression, click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel." Double-click "Hardware and Sound" and select the "Modem" tab. In the new window that opens, click the "Advanced" tab. Click "Change Default Preferences," then select "Disable" for modem compression in the "Data Connection Preferences" section. Press "OK" and modem compression is removed.

3. Pick up your handset on your telephone and listen for any line noise. Line noise sounds like static on the phone. This static causes degradation in your download speed. Unfortunately, this problem is only fixable by your Internet host provider. If you hear static on the phone line, contact the provider for your modem line and ask for a technician to evaluate any issues.
