How to Change the Oil on a 1991 Buick Regal
Performing an oil change on a 1991 Buick Regal is not that different from changing the oil on any other car. Doing it yourself can save time and money. Oil lubricates the internal parts on the engine. When the oil starts to break down, it is not as efficient at lubricating, and as a result, engine wear will start to accelerate. To change the oil, you need only a few tools and a bit of spare time.
Things You'll Need
- Wheel chocks
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Latex or Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan
- Socket set
- Oil filter wrench
- Funnel
Instructions

Draining the Oil
-
1
Park the Buick Regal on level ground. Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels with wheel chocks. Jack the front of the car just high enough to gain access to the drain plug and to be able to fit the oil pan under the vehicle. Install jack stands for safety.
-
2
Put on the gloves. Slide the drain pan under the vehicle. Using a socket wrench, loosen the drain plug. Position the drain pan under the drain plug. Remove the drain plug to allow the oil to drain into the pan. Reinstall the drain plug.

3
Locate the oil filter by looking through the passenger's side fender well of the vehicle. Turn the front wheels to the left for easier access to the filter. Move the drain pan under the oil filter to catch oil that drains out. Using a filter wrench, loosen and remove the oil filter and set it in the oil drain pan.
Filling the Engine With Oil

4
Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter by simply inserting your gloved finger into new oil and wiping it along the gasket surface. This will ease installation and help ensure a good seal. Install the new filter and screw it on hand-tight only. Once the gasket material of the filter makes contact, continue to tighten for at least another one-fourth turn.
-
5
Fill the crankcase with new oil, with a funnel. Make sure to use a type of oil recommended by Buick Regal owner's manual. (If you are unsure what type to use, ask the clerk at the auto store where you plan to purchase the replacement oil.)
-
6
Remove the oil pan from under the car. Remove the jack stands, then lower vehicle and remove the jack. Now that the vehicle is level again, check the oil level on the dipstick.
-
7
Start the vehicle and check for leaks around the oil filter. Put the used oil into a suitable container to transport back to the local automotive retailer for recycling.

Tips & Warnings
Always wear gloves when working with used motor oil.
While the oil is draining, use that time to inspect other fluids under the hood and top off, as necessary.
Check the belts and hoses at each oil change, and check for small cracks or other signs of wear.
Use caution around hot exhaust pipes to avoid burns.
Always properly support the vehicle on jack stands to reduce the chance of injury.
