Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system gives its users a range of options for setting up a home LAN (local area network), including an entirely wireless option. With the proper hardware, Windows Vista users have the ability to connect to the Internet and to other computers without wires. To use this method of home networking, you need to have a wireless router (if connected to an Internet gateway/modem it will provide wireless Internet in addition to networking) and each computer in the network must have a wireless adapter. If your setup meets these requirements, setting up a wireless network can be accomplished with ease.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless router (available and in range of your computer)
  • Wireless adapter (installed in your computer)
  • Wireless password (WEP key), if applicable

Instructions

Set up your wireless router and turn it on. Consult your router documentation for specific instructions regarding its installation and use. For Internet access to be available to your wireless network, you will need to connect the router to a modem with an active ISP (internet service provider).

Connect your Vista computer to the wireless network. Go to Start, then click on "Connect to." Select the name of your wireless network (this should have been created during the router setup) and click "Connect." If prompted, enter the password (WEP key) you created during the router setup.

Repeat this process for any other Vista computers you wish to connect to the wireless network. You have now successfully set up a wireless network with your Windows Vista computer(s).
