How to Draw a Side View of Cartoon People

What's nice about drawing cartoon people is that they don't need to be accurately proportioned, and they're not expected to be beautiful. In fact, the more simplistic they are, the more obvious it is that they're meant to be cartoons. Drawing a cartoon person seen from the side isn't much different from drawing a cartoon person from the front--the basic structure is the same, but because you're drawing the side view, only half of it is visible: one leg, one arm and half a face.

Things You'll Need

• Paper
• Pencil
• Eraser

Instructions

1. Draw a circle for the head, and a larger circle (or an oval) directly beneath for the body. Connect the two with two parallel vertical lines, to form the neck.

2. Draw two parallel vertical lines extending from the bottom of the body (to form the leg). At the end of these two lines, draw an oval sideways (for the foot). Note that the legs may be long and skinny, or short and fat.

3. In the middle of the body, draw two parallel vertical lines, to form the arms. At the end of the arms, draw a shape like half a daisy, to form a hand with fingers.

4. Draw a dot for the eye to the right of the center of the head. Draw a curved line underneath, extending to the edge of the head, to form the mouth. Just above the mouth, draw a lump on the outside of the head, forming the nose.

Tips & Warnings

• Once you have formed the basic shape of the person, add details as necessary. Hair, clothes and other accessories should be added on a case-by-case basis. Cartoon characters can be as bare and simple as you like, or they can have a lot of details.

• Although these instructions may serve as a guide for drawing the person, you must decide personally what characteristics that person must have. Whether to draw a long, skinny body or a short fat body, or a body of semi-normal proportions, is up to you.
