How to Set Up a Static IP Address in uTorrent

How to Set Up a Static IP Address in uTorrent thumbnail
Most routers assign your computer an IP address dynamically by default.

Setting up your uTorrent client to work with a static IP address requires you to change some configurations in your router settings. Your router typically chooses an IP address from a list of available IPs--the DHCP range. Choosing an IP address outside of this range is necessary so that your router does not assign it to another computer. This walk-through assumes that your operating system is already setup to use a static IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run."

    • 2

Type "cmd /k; ipconfig /all" into the prompt and hit the "Enter" key.

    • 3

Find the default gateway number in the DOS window that opens up. Copy it and paste it into your web browser. Hit the "Enter" key.

    • 4

Enter your username and password in the login window. If you don't know this information, it can usually be found in your router's instruction manual.

    • 5

Find your router's DHCP range settings in the menu.

    • 6

Reduce your router's DHCP range by one IP address. This IP address which is now on the outside of the range will become your static IP.

    • 7

Save and exit your router's configuration menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have your router's manual and do not know the login and password, some common defaults are: admin/admin, admin/blank, blank/admin and even blank/blank.

  • Your internet provider may have to change your IP address from dynamic to static.
