How to Repair the Timer on a Whirlpool Washing Machine
The timer on your Whirlpool washing machine advances the cycles throughout the washing process. If you washer is not advancing or stays in a particular cycle too long, you need to repair the timer. The timer is a sealed unit, so the only repair that you can do is to replace the entire unit. Timers are available at appliance repair centers. Disconnect the Whirlpool washing machine power cord from the outlet. Push the timer control knob in toward the console and rotate the knob counter-clockwise to remove the knob from the timer stem. Remove the faceplate for the timer off the face of the control console.

Remove the two screws that secure the timer to the control console with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Locate the screws at the lower front-end caps of the control console that secure the console to the washing machine cabinet. Remove both screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Pull the bottom of the control console toward you to release the bottom tabs and lift the front of the console toward the rear of the washer. The control console sits on rear hinges.

Pull the wires off the terminal ends on the timer with your fingers. Grab the wires by the ends only to avoid breaking the wires. Pull the timer away from the console.

Take the timer to an appliance repair center for a replacement. Set the new timer in the control console and thread the securing screws through the face of the console to the timer. Tighten the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

Slide the wire ends over the terminals on the new timer. Pull the front of the control console forward to lower the console and snap the bottom tabs into the top of the washer cabinet.

Secure the control console to the washer with the retaining screws. Slide the face plate over the timer shaft and thread the knob onto the shaft. Plug the Whirlpool power cord back into the outlet.
