An error code 13 occurs on an original Xbox gaming console when the Xbox dashboard fails to launch. This usually happens when an Xbox has been modified or has had third-party software installed. The original dashboard becomes incompatible with new dashboard updates that install when connected to Xbox Live. Luckily, you won't need to send your Xbox gaming console into Microsoft for service because error code 13 can be repaired from home with the help of newer Xbox video games.

Unhook your Ethernet cable from your Xbox. You won't want Internet access for these steps.

Find a newer Xbox video game. Games made after autumn of 2004 all have the dashboard update. This includes games such as "Halo 2" and "NCAA Football 2005."

Insert the game into your Xbox. Make sure the disc has its writing facing up and shut the disc drive to let the game load.

Let the game install the dashboard update automatically. This will occur with most new games, although some need to be installed manually.

Install the Microsoft Dashboard manually when it doesn't work automatically. In the main menu, choose "Xbox Live". From here, the game will update your dashboard and clear the error code 13.

Plug your Ethernet cable back into your Xbox.

Warnings

If this method does not work, try another recent video game for dashboard installation. After that, you may need to contact Xbox technical support.
