How to Design Documents With a Word Processor
If you need to create a flyer, advertisement or other document, don't spend money on a desktop publisher, graphic designer or marketing company; you've got everything you need to design a document with the word processing software included with your computer, such as Microsoft Word. Using word processing software to create documents provides fewer design aspects than a desktop publishing or graphics program would allow, but for something simple, you can create a document with just a few clicks of your mouse.

1
Open Microsoft Word. If a standard, 8.5" x 11" page did not default, click "File," then click "Page Setup" and click the "Paper" tab, then choose "Letter" from the "Paper Size" scroll bar.
-
2
(Optional) Click the "Insert" menu, then click "Picture" and choose "From File." Browse to where you have photos or image saved on your computer to add to the document. Double-click each one, which adds them to the page in the workspace.

3
Click the "Insert" menu, then click "Picture" and choose "Clip Art." Use the "Clip Art" tools to search for images to illustrate your document, such as flowers for a plant sale or mops and brooms to advertise cleaning services.
-
4
Position your cursor at the top of the page and type the headline of the document. Then highlight the headline and change the text by choosing a font, size and color.
-
5
Add more text to the document by pressing the "Enter" key to move to the desired space or clicking your mouse cursor in the area. Change the fonts and colors as desired.
-
6
(Optional) Click the "Format" menu and select "Background." Choose a color to fill the entire back of the page or click "Fill Effects" and opt for a texture or pattern such as tye-dye, sunburst or grass.
-
7
(Optional) Click the "Format" menu and select "Borders and Shading." Click the "Page Border" tab, then click the box to the left of the word "Box," which will put a border around your entire document. Choose from "Border Art," lines or geometric patterns.
