How to Play Beginner's Football
For beginners, football should be stripped down to the basics with simple routes and blocking concepts. Pick-up games are one of the most common outdoor activities during family get-togethers and friendly parties. Though these games can become uncomfortably competitive, beginner's football can be a nice way to break a sweat and have fun.

1
Outline rules for the game. Decide if and when the quarterback can be rushed and if blockers can become receivers. Select the game's length and the number of points for each touchdown.
-
2
Set the ball down near the center of the playing space. This will give receivers plenty of room to run unobstructed by trees, fences and other yard objects.
-
-
3
Give inexperienced players simple routes to run. Examples include slants, where players run at a 45-degree angle; or go routes, where players run straight up the field.
-
4
Take position on the line of scrimmage. Receivers are usually lined up about 10 to 15 yards away from where the ball is set.
-
5
Point out uncovered receivers, if the opposing team's offense "motions" or adjusts before the snap of the ball.
