How to Prepare for a College Acting Audition

Prepare for your audition.

College acting auditions require students to perform a monologue (an uninterrupted speech by a character) to land a role in a stage play, musical or film. The monologue that you choose can make or break your audition. It's best to select, memorize and rehearse a monologue that is representative of you. Also be prepared to do a cold reading where you are handed a script and asked to read aloud from a scene without any advanced rehearsal.

1. Select and memorize a classical or modern monologue. Avoid using monologues that are not from a play.

2. Choose a character within your age range. Most directors look for an actor who's physical appearance relates to the role.

3. Plan your audition wardrobe. Dressing in full costume is unnecessary, but do make an effort to look the part of your character.

4. Research the play you're auditioning for. Read the entire play and familiarize yourself with the setting, theme and characters.
