How to Make a Uniform Grout Color
Grout color enhances the overall look of a tiled floor or wall. Different batches of the same brand and color grout can result in slightly different colors, which is noticeable on a tiled project. There are several precautions you can take while applying grout to ensure an even overall color. If you have already applied grout and the color is uneven, you can stain or paint over the grout to create an even color. Grout and supplies can be found at home improvement stores. Things You'll Need
- Grout
- Wheelbarrow or other large container
- Water
- Trowel
- Grout sealer
- Grout paint or stain
- Small, stiff-bristled paintbrush
Instructions
-
-
1
Purchase enough grout to complete your project. If you need more than one bag of grout, make sure to purchase the same brand and color with each bag for the best match.
-
2
Mix each bag of grout in a large container, such as a wheelbarrow. Mixing the powdered grout before adding water will ensure that the color stays even and uniform, since each bag will be equally mixed with the other bags.

-
3
Add water to the grout in the ratio and quantity specified by the manufacturer. Adding the incorrect amount of water can alter the resulting color of the grout.
-
4
Apply the grout to the tile using a trowel. Keep the layer even so that the entire surface has the same thickness.
-
5
Allow the grout to cure per the manufacturer's directions.
-
6
Seal the grout using a grout sealer. A sealant will keep the grout from becoming stained, which will protect the even color.
-
7
Purchase grout paint or stain for grout that has been applied and is uneven in color. Follow the manufacturer's directions to apply the paint or stain using a small, stiff-bristled brush. Painting over grout can change the color for an even, uniform result.
