How to Reset an 8 GB Zune

Microsoft's 8GB Zune has two reset options. The first option is the soft reset, also called a restart. This is an excellent option if your Zune is running slowly or if it's inoperable or frozen. The second option is the hard reset, also called a factory reset. This option is reserved for extreme software issues, or if you plan on selling or giving your Zune to someone else. The hard reset restores the Zune's default settings, but it also clears the memory from the device.

Instructions

Soft Resetting an 8GB Zune

1. Flip the Hold switch on top to "Unlock."

2. Press and hold the top part of your Zune-directional pad (Up).

3. Press and hold the "Back" button while continuing to hold the directional pad. Wait a few moments, and then release both buttons when your Zune begins to reset.

Hard Resetting an 8GB Zune

1. Make sure the Hold switch is in the "Unlock" position, and then press and hold the top part of your directional pad (Up).

2. Press and hold the "Back" button while holding the top part of the directional pad.

3. Release both buttons when your Zune starts to power up, and then immediately press and hold "Play," "Back" and the center directional pad button.

4. Continue to hold all three buttons until "Please Wait" displays on your Zune's screen. The hard reset process will then commence.
