Display the flag on Veterans Day to show patriotic support.

On November 11, 1918, the United States, France and Great Britain held memorial services honoring unknown soldiers who gave their lives in World War I. This important day, originally known as Armistice Day, was decreed a national holiday in 1938; it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 in honor of every veteran who ever served in the United States Armed Forces. Displaying the flag on Veterans Day is a show of patriotic support to all veterans, both living and deceased.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the flag to the flagpole with the blue field in the upper left corner.

    • 2

Raise the flag to the top of the flagpole as early as possible in the morning hours (sunrise at the earliest).

    • 3

Leave the flag flying throughout the entire day of November 11 as long as there is no inclement weather. If rain or snow develops, take the flag down unless the flag is made of weatherproof fabrics that will not suffer damage from moisture.

    • 4

Take the flag down at or a few minutes before sunset.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is only appropriate to fly a flag during the time between sunset and sunrise if you have a light shining on the flag to illuminate it.

  • To put the flag away properly, have an assistant help you fold it. Have your assistant stand facing you with each of you holding one short edge of the flag. Fold the flag in half lengthwise two times so the blue portion is on the top of the folds. The person holding the edge of the flag with the stripes begins folding the flag into triangle folds and finishes folding the flag with the blue portion visible on the top.

  • Alternatively, hang the flag vertically with the blue field in the upper left corner as you stand facing the flag.
