Instructions

    • 1

Compile all the information you have about your Irish ancestors, including first and/or last names, birth, marriage and death records, year of birth, and church membership and wills.

    • 2

Consult recordsireland.com or irishtimes.com to confirm the information you have with existing records, and perhaps gain the name of a husband, wife, mother or father to bring your research back another generation.

    • 3

Confirm the county or village or residence of your ancestors, at which point you will be able to trace their ancestry by county at the irish-roots website. County records begin in 1864.

    • 4

Find the parish to which your ancestor belonged, especially if you have traced the roots to before 1864. Before this date, all records were kept through churches. This will be the only feasible way to trace your ancestry back further.

    • 5

Visit the location to which you have traced the roots furthest. Upon inspection, you may be able to locate artifacts, city property or information from local museums and history books.
