DIY Scroll Invitations
Scroll invitations add a creative touch to any party or celebration with an old-fashioned or medieval theme. Many couples choose to use scroll invitations for their weddings, but they also are appropriate for costume parties, Renaissance festivals or even a child's birthday party. Making scroll invitations by hand can be a big project, but the final product is creative, and guests will enjoy unrolling the scroll to receive their personalized invitation.

1
Write the text of the invitation. Although you can use traditional invitation wording, many people like to bring the theme of the scroll invitations into the wording by using phrases such as "hear ye" or by adding "prince" or "princess" in front of the names of the people the party is celebrating.
-
2
Format the scroll invitation with margins of at least 2 inches above and below the text to leave room to roll it around the dowels.
-
3
Print the invitation on your desired paper. Although regular copy paper will work, you may choose to use a paper with an older feel such as parchment or textured linen. One way to make regular paper look older is to stain it with damp tea bags.
-
4
Cut the dowels 1 to 2 inches wider than the invitation. You will need two dowels for each invitation. If you will be using end caps on the dowels, make sure the dowels are long enough so the invitation will fit between the end caps.
-
5
Glue wooden end caps onto the dowels if you are using them. Other options for decorating the dowels are to glue small ribbons or tassels to the ends of the dowels or to paint the dowels.
-
6
Use a paintbrush to apply a thin strip of glue along the top edge of the invitation. Center the dowel and stick it onto the invitation, making sure that it is straight so the invitation will roll neatly around the dowel. Smooth out any bumps, roll the invitation around the dowel once and secure with a clothespin near each end while it dries. Repeat on the bottom edge of the invitation.
-
7
Remove the clothespins after the glue has dried and roll the scroll invitation so half of it is around each of the dowels.
-
8
Tie a piece of ribbon around the center of the scroll invitation to keep it rolled.
